THURSDAY OF THE TWENTY SEVENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

Antiphon
Cf. Est 4: 17

Within your will, O Lord, all things are established,
and there is none that can resist your will.
For you have made all things, the heaven and the earth,
and all that is held within the circle of heaven;
you are the Lord of all.

Collect

Almighty ever-living God,
who in the abundance of your kindness
surpass the merits and the desires of those who entreat you,
pour out your mercy upon us
to pardon what conscience dreads
and to give what prayer does not dare to ask.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, forever and ever.

Amen.

Thursday of the Twenty-seventh Week in Ordinary Time

Reading
MAL 3:13-20B

You have defied me in word, says the LORD,
yet you ask, "What have we spoken against you?"
You have said, "It is vain to serve God,
and what do we profit by keeping his command,
And going about in penitential dress
in awe of the LORD of hosts?
Rather must we call the proud blessed;
for indeed evildoers prosper,
and even tempt God with impunity."
Then they who fear the LORD spoke with one another,
and the LORD listened attentively;
And a record book was written before him
of those who fear the LORD and trust in his name.
And they shall be mine, says the LORD of hosts,
my own special possession, on the day I take action.
And I will have compassion on them,
as a man has compassion on his son who serves him.
Then you will again see the distinction
between the just and the wicked;
Between the one who serves God,
and the one who does not serve him.
For lo, the day is coming, blazing like an oven,
when all the proud and all evildoers will be stubble,
And the day that is coming will set them on fire,
leaving them neither root nor branch,
says the LORD of hosts.
But for you who fear my name, there will arise
the sun of justice with its healing rays.

Responsorial Psalm
PS 1:1-2, 3, 4 AND 6

R. Blessed are they who hope in the Lord.

Blessed the man who follows not
the counsel of the wicked
Nor walks in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the company of the insolent,
But delights in the law of the LORD
and meditates on his law day and night.

R. Blessed are they who hope in the Lord.

He is like a tree
planted near running water,
That yields its fruit in due season,
and whose leaves never fade.
Whatever he does, prospers.

R. Blessed are they who hope in the Lord.

Not so the wicked, not so;
they are like chaff which the wind drives away.
For the LORD watches over the way of the just,
but the way of the wicked vanishes.

R. Blessed are they who hope in the Lord.

Alleluia
ACTS 16:14B

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Open our hearts, O Lord,
to listen to the words of your Son.

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel
LK 11:5-13

Jesus said to his disciples:

"Suppose one of you has a friend
to whom he goes at midnight and says,
'Friend, lend me three loaves of bread,
for a friend of mine has arrived at my house from a journey
and I have nothing to offer him,'
and he says in reply from within,
'Do not bother me; the door has already been locked
and my children and I are already in bed.
I cannot get up to give you anything.'
I tell you, if he does not get up to give him the loaves
because of their friendship,
he will get up to give him whatever he needs
because of his persistence.

"And I tell you, ask and you will receive;
seek and you will find;
knock and the door will be opened to you.
For everyone who asks, receives;
and the one who seeks, finds;
and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
What father among you would hand his son a snake
when he asks for a fish?
Or hand him a scorpion when he asks for an egg?
If you then, who are wicked,
know how to give good gifts to your children,
how much more will the Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit
to those who ask him?"

October 12

Saint Edwin of Northumbria (586 - 633)

In the year 616, King Ethelfrith was slain in battle by Redwald, King of the East Angles. Edwin of Deira became king of the whole kingdom of Northumbria and after the death of Redwald,
he had a certain lordship over the other English kings.

He married Ethelburga, daughter of St. Ethelbert, King of Kent after promising to allow her to practice her Christian religion. St. Paulinus was sent as chaplain to the Queen and bishop for his converts. When Queen Ethelburga gave birth to a daughter, she was baptized with twelve others on Whitsunday, and called Eanfleda; they were the first fruits of the Northumbrians. Edwin was a man of unusual wisdom and deliberated in his heart to which religion he should follow. Paulinus continued to instruct him and to pray for his conversion. King Edwin was baptized at York at Easter in the year 627, on the site of the present York Minster, in the wooden church of St. Peter which he had caused to be built. This good king had reigned seventeen years when the Welsh Cadwalon marched in arms against him with Penda of Mercia, a pagan. King Edwin met them at Hatfield Chase on October 12, 633, and in the ensuing battle he was slain. St. Edwin was certainly vernerated in England as a martyr, but though his claims to sanctity are else doubtful than those of some other royal saints, English and other, he has had no liturgical cultus so far as is known.

His relics were held in veneration, churches were dedicated in his honor in London and at Brean in Somerset; and Pope Gregory XIII permitted him to be represented among the English martyrs on the walls of the chapel of the Venerabile at Rome.

  33. To our God, high-throned above:
  34. We, with many generations
  35. Join to praise thy name of love.
  36. In the scriptures, by the Spirit,
  37. May we see the Saviour’s face,
  38. Hear his word and heed his calling,
  39. Know his will and grow in grace.

  40. Psalm 67 (68)
  41. The Lord's triumphal journey

  42. Let God arise,
  43. let those who hate him flee before him.

  44. God arises and his enemies are scattered:
  45. those who hate him flee from his sight.
  46. You blow them away like wisps of smoke;
  47. as wax melts in front of a fire,
  48. so the wicked melt away before God.
  49. The righteous are glad and exult in God’s sight;
  50. they rejoice in their gladness.
  51. Sing to the Lord and celebrate his name!
  52. Make a road for him who rides upon the clouds –
  53. “The Lord” is his name.
  54. Rejoice in his sight,
  55. the father of orphans, defender of widows,
  56. God in his holy dwelling-place,
  57. God, who gives the lonely a house to dwell in,
  58. God, who leads captives out into prosperity;
  59. but the rebellious shall live in a desert land.
  60. God, when you set out in the sight of your people,
  61. when you crossed the wilderness – the earth shook.
  62. The heavens sent down dew at your coming –
  63. the God of Sinai, the God of Israel.
  64. At your bidding the rains came, O God,
  65. your inheritance was worn out but you refreshed it.
  66. All your creatures took up residence there,
  67. in your goodness you made a place for the needy.

  68. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
  69. as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
  70. world without end.

  75. This God of ours is a God who saves.
  76. The Lord holds the keys of death.

  77. The Lord gives out the word,
  78. and a great army of maidens brings the news:
  79. “The kings of the armies are fleeing, they are fleeing,
  80. and the fair one at home is dividing the spoils.
  81. While you sleep among the sheepfolds,
  82. the wings of the dove shine with silver,
  83. her feathers glow with green gold.
  84. Through her the Almighty scatters the kings,
  85. and the mountain of Zalmon is white with snow.”
  86. The mountain of Bashan is God’s mountain;
  87. the mountain of God is a high-peaked mountain.
  88. Why do you envy it, you high-peaked mountains,
  89. envy the mountain that God has chosen?
  90. The Lord will dwell there for ever.
  91. The chariots of God are ten thousand thousand:
  92. the Lord has come from Sinai to his holy sanctuary.
  93. You have scaled the heights, you have taken captives,

  101. take the scalps of those who tread the path of crime.
  102. The Lord has spoken:
  103. “I shall bring them back from Bashan,
  104. I shall bring them back from the depths of the sea,
  105. so that your feet may be dipped in blood
  106. and the tongues of your dogs receive food from your enemies.”

  115. sing to God, praise the Lord.

  116. They have seen your processions, O God,
  117. the processions of God, my king, to his sanctuary.
  118. First came the singers, last the musicians,
  119. between them the maidens playing their drums.
  120. “Bless God in the assemblies:
  121. bless the Lord, you who spring from Israel!”
  122. There was young Benjamin, leading them,
  123. the princes of Judah in their rich robes,
  124. the princes of Zebulun, the princes of Naphtali.
  125. O God, command in your strength;
  126. make firm what you have achieved in us.
  127. From your temple in Jerusalem,
  128. kings shall bring you tribute.
  129. Rebuke the wild beast of the reeds,
  130. the herd of bulls, the lords of peoples.
  131. Let them lie prostrate before you with tribute of silver.
  132. Scatter the peoples that delight in war.
  133. Nobles will come from Egypt,
  134. Ethiopia will stretch out its hands to God.
  135. Kingdoms of the earth, sing to God;
  136. celebrate the Lord.
  137. Sing to God who rides on the highest heavens,
  138. at the origin of all things.
  139. Listen! – he speaks, a voice of power.
  140. Acknowledge the strength of the Lord:
  141. his majesty is over Israel,
  142. his strength is in the clouds.
  143. God inspires awe in his holy place;
  144. he, the God of Israel, gives power to his people;
  145. he gives them strength.
  146. Blessed be God!

  147. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
  148. as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
  149. world without end.
  150. Amen.

  151. Kingdoms of the earth,
  152. sing to God, praise the Lord.

  153. I will hear whatever the Lord God has to say:
  154. – words of peace for his people.

  155. First Reading
  156. 1 Timothy 3:1-16

  157. Here is a saying that you can rely on: To want to be a presiding elder is to want to do a noble work. That is why the president must have an impeccable character. He must not have been married more than once, and he must be temperate, discreet and courteous, hospitable and a good teacher; not a heavy drinker, nor hot-tempered, but kind and peaceable. He must not be a lover of money. He must be a man who manages his own family well and brings his children up to obey him and be well-behaved: how can any man who does not understand how to manage his own family have responsibility for the church of God? He should not be a new convert, in case pride might turn his head and then he might be condemned as the devil was condemned. It is also necessary that people outside the Church should speak well of him,
  158. so that he never gets a bad reputation and falls into the devil’s trap.

  159. In the same way, deacons must be respectable men whose word can be trusted, moderate in the amount of wine they drink and with no squalid greed for money. They must be conscientious believers in the mystery of the faith. They are to be examined first, and only admitted to serve as deacons if there is nothing against them. In the same way, the women must be respectable, not gossips but sober and quite reliable. Deacons must not have been married more than once, and must be men who manage their children and families well. Those of them who carry out their duties well as deacons will earn a high standing for themselves and be rewarded with great assurance in their work for the faith in Christ Jesus.

  160. At the moment of writing to you, I am hoping that I may be with you soon; but in case I should be delayed, I wanted you to know how people ought to behave in God’s family – that is, in the Church of the living God, which upholds the truth and keeps it safe. Without any doubt, the mystery of our religion is very deep indeed:

  161. He was made visible in the flesh,
  162. attested by the Spirit,
  163. seen by angels,
  164. proclaimed to the pagans,
  165. believed in by the world,
  166. taken up in glory.

  167. Responsory

  168. Keep watch over the flock of which the Holy Spirit has given you the charge,
  169. as shepherds of the Church of God,
  170. which he won for himself by the blood of his own Son.

  171. Stewards are expected to show themselves trustworthy,
  172. as shepherds of the Church of God,
  173. which he won for himself by the blood of his own Son.

  174. Second Reading
  175. A letter to the Trallians
  176. by St Ignatius of Antioch

  177. I wish to forewarn you, for you are my dearest children

  178. Ignatius, also called Theophorus, to the holy church at Tralles in the province of Asia, dear to God the Father of Jesus Christ, elect and worthy of God, enjoying peace in body and in the Spirit through the passion of Jesus Christ, who is our hope through our resurrection when we rise to him. In the manner of the apostles,
  179. I too send greetings to you with the fullness of grace and extend my every best wish.

  180. Reports of your splendid character have reached me: how you are beyond reproach and ever unshaken in your patient endurance – qualities that you have not acquired but are yours by nature. My informant was your own bishop Polybius, who by the will of God and Jesus Christ visited me here in Smyrna. He so fully entered into my joy at being in chains for Christ that I came to see your whole community embodied in him. Moreover, when I learned from him of your God-given kindliness toward me,
  181. I broke out in words of praise for God. It is on him, I discovered, that you pattern your lives.

  182. Your submission to your bishop, who is in the place of Jesus Christ, shows me that you are not living as men usually do but in the manner of Jesus himself, who died for us that you might escape death by belief in his death. Thus one thing is necessary, and you already observe it, that you do nothing without your bishop; indeed, be subject to the clergy as well, seeing in them the apostles of Jesus Christ our hope,
  183. for if we live in him we shall be found in him.

  184. Deacons, too, who are ministers of the mysteries of Jesus should in all things be pleasing to all men.
  185. For they are not mere servants with food and drink, but emissaries of God’s Church;
  186. hence they should guard themselves against anything deserving reproach as they would against fire.

  187. Similarly, all should respect the deacons as Jesus Christ, just as all should regard the bishop as the image of the Father, and the clergy as God’s senate and the college of the apostles. Without these three orders you cannot begin to speak of a church. I am confident that you share my feelings in this matter, for I have had an example of your love in the person of your bishop who is with me now. His whole bearing is a great lesson,
  188. and his very gentleness wields a mighty influence.

  189. By God’s grace there are many things I understand, but I keep well within my limitations for fear that boasting should be my undoing. At the moment, then, I must be more apprehensive than ever and pay no attention at all to those who flatter me; their praise is as a scourge. For though I have a fierce desire to suffer martyrdom, I know not whether I am worthy of it. Most people are unaware of my passionate longing,
  190. but it assails me with increasing intensity. My present need,
  191. then, is for that humility by which the prince of this world is overthrown.

  192. And so I strongly urge you, not I so much as the love of Jesus Christ, to be nourished exclusively on Christian fare, abstaining from the alien food that is heresy. And this you will do if you are neither arrogant nor cut off from God, from Jesus Christ, and from the bishop and the teachings of the apostles. Whoever is within the sanctuary is pure; but whoever is not is unclean. That is to say, whoever acts apart from the bishop and the clergy and the deacons is not pure in his conscience. In writing this,
  193. it is not that I am aware of anything of the sort among you; I only wish to forewarn you,
  194. for you are my dearest children.

  195. Responsory

  196. Do all you can to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
  197. There is one body, one Spirit,
  198. just as there was one hope held out in God’s call to you.
  199. There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism.

  200. There can be no other foundation beyond that which is already laid:
  201. I mean, Christ Jesus himself.
  202. There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism.

  203. Let us pray.

  204. Almighty, ever-living God,
  205. whose love surpasses all that we ask or deserve,
  206. open up for us the treasures of your mercy.
  207. Forgive us all that weighs on our conscience,
  208. and grant us more even than we dare to ask.
  209. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
  210. who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
  211. one God, for ever and ever.
  212. Amen.

  213. Let us praise the Lord.
  214. – Thanks be to God.
