Prayer of Intercession to the Immaculate Heart of Mary

V. O God, come unto my assistance;
R. O Lord, make haste to help me.

I. Immaculate Virgin,
who being conceived without sin,
didst direct every movement of thy most pure heart toward God,
and wast always submissive to His divine will;
obtain for me the grace to hate sin with all my heart
and to learn from thee to live in perfect resignation to the will of God.

II. O Mary,
I wonder at that profound humility,
which troubled thy blessed heart at the message of the Angel Gabriel,
that thou hadst been chosen to be the Mother of the Son of the most high God,
the while thou didst profess thyself His lowly handmaiden;
ashamed at the sight of my own pride,
I beg of thee the grace of a contrite and humble heart,
so that, acknowledging my misery,
I may come to attain the glory promised to those who are truly humble of heart.

III. Blessed Virgin,
who didst keep in thy heart the precious treasure of the words of Jesus thy Son and,
pondering over the sublime mysteries therein contained,
couldst live only for God,
how am I confounded by the coldness of my heart!
Ah, dear Mother,
obtain for me the grace of meditating always on the holy law of God,
and of seeking to follow thine example in the fervent practice of all the Christian virtues.

IV. O glorious Queen of Martyrs,
whose sacred heart,
in the Passion of thy Son,
was cruelly pierced by the sword foretold by the holy and aged Simeon;
obtain for my heart true courage and holy patience
to bear well the tribulations and trials of this wretched life;
may I show myself to be thy true child by crucifying my flesh
and all its desires in following the mortification of the Cross.

V. O Mary,
mystic rose, whose lovable heart,
burning with the living fire of love,
adopted us as thy children at the foot of the Cross,
becoming thus our most tender Mother,
make me experience the sweetness of thy motherly heart
and the power of thine intercession with Jesus,
in all the dangers that beset me during life,
and especially at the dread hour of my death;
in such wise may my heart be ever united to thine,
and love Jesus both now and through endless ages.

DT 31:1-8

When Moses had finished speaking to all Israel, he said to them,
“I am now one hundred and twenty years old
and am no longer able to move about freely;
besides, the LORD has told me that I shall not cross this Jordan.
It is the LORD, your God, who will cross before you;
he will destroy these nations before you,
that you may supplant them.
It is Joshua who will cross before you, as the LORD promised.
The LORD will deal with them just as he dealt with Sihon and Og,
the kings of the Amorites whom he destroyed,
and with their country.
When, therefore, the LORD delivers them up to you,
you must deal with them exactly as I have ordered you.
Be brave and steadfast; have no fear or dread of them,
for it is the LORD, your God, who marches with you;
he will never fail you or forsake you.”

Then Moses summoned Joshua and in the presence of all Israel
said to him, “Be brave and steadfast,

you will not enter the Kingdom of heaven.
Whoever becomes humble like this child
is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven.
And whoever receives one child such as this in my name receives me.

“See that you do not despise one of these little ones,
for I say to you that their angels in heaven
always look upon the face of my heavenly Father.
What is your opinion?
If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them goes astray,
will he not leave the ninety-nine in the hills
and go in search of the stray?
And if he finds it, amen, I say to you, he rejoices more over it
than over the ninety-nine that did not stray.
In just the same way, it is not the will of your heavenly Father

Sts. Pontian and Hippolytus (d. 235)


Two men died for the faith after harsh treatment and exhaustion in the mines of Sardinia. 
One had been pope for five years, the other an antipope for 18. 
They died reconciled.

Pontian. Pontian was a Roman who served as pope from 230 to 235. During his reign he held a synod which confirmed the excommunication of the great theologian Origen in Alexandria. Pontian was banished to exile by the Roman emperor in 235, and resigned so that a successor could be elected in Rome. He was sent to the “unhealthy” island of Sardinia, where he died of harsh treatment in 235. With him was Hippolytus (see below) with whom he was reconciled. 
The bodies of both martyrs were brought back to Rome and buried with solemn rites as martyrs.

Hippolytus. As a priest in Rome, Hippolytus (the name means “a horse turned loose”) was at first “holier than the Church.” He censured the pope for not coming down hard enough on a certain heresy—calling him a tool in the hands of one Callistus, a deacon—and coming close to advocating the opposite heresy himself. When Callistus was elected pope, Hippolytus accused him of being too lenient with penitents, and had himself elected antipope by a group of followers. He felt that the Church must be composed of pure souls uncompromisingly separated from the world: Hippolytus evidently thought that his group fitted the description. He remained in schism through the reigns of three popes. In 235 he was also banished to the island of Sardinia. Shortly before or after this event, he was reconciled to the Church, 
and died with Pope Pontian in exile.

Hippolytus was a rigorist, a vehement and intransigent man for whom even orthodox doctrine and practice were not purified enough. He is, nevertheless, the most important theologian and prolific religious writer before the age of Constantine. His writings are the fullest source of our knowledge of the Roman liturgy and the structure of the Church in the second and third centuries. His works include many Scripture commentaries, polemics against heresies and a history of the world. A marble statue, dating from the third century, representing the saint sitting in a chair, was found in 1551. On one side is inscribed his table for computing the date of Easter, 
on the other a list of how the system works out until the year 224. 
Blessed John XXIII installed the statue in the Vatican library.

Let God arise,

This God of ours is a God who saves.
The Lord holds the keys of death.

the wings of the dove shine with silver,
her feathers glow with green gold.
Through her the Almighty scatters the kings,

when they have shredded them like flesh in a pot
and like meat in a cauldron,
then they will cry out to the Lord.
But he will not answer them.
He will hide his face at that time
because of all the crimes they have committed.
The Lord says this against the prophets
who lead my people astray:
So long as they have something to eat
they cry ‘Peace.’
But on anyone who puts nothing into their mouths
they declare war.
And so the night will come to you: an end of vision;
darkness for you: an end of divination.
The sun will set for the prophets,
the day will go black for them.
Then the seers will be covered with shame,
the diviners with confusion;
they will all cover their lips,
because no answer comes from God.
Not so with me, I am full of strength

of justice and courage
to declare Jacob’s crime to his face

From a treatise On the Incarnation of the Lord
by Theodoret of Cyr, bishop

By his wounds we are healed

Our Savior’s passion is a healing remedy for us, as the prophet teaches when he cries out: He bears our sins and suffers pain for us, and we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God and afflicted. But for our sins he was wounded, for our iniquities he was bruised; upon him fell the chastisement that brought us peace, and by his wounds we are healed. We had all gone astray like sheep, and therefore he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, 
and was dumb like a sheep before its shearer.

When a shepherd sees that his sheep have scattered, he keeps one of them under his control and leads it to the pastures he chooses, and thus he draws the other sheep back to him by means of this one. And so it was when God the Word saw that the human race had gone astray: he took the form of a slave and united it to himself, and by means of it won over the whole race of men to him, enticing the sheep that were grazing in bad pastures and exposed to wolves, 
and leading them to the pastures of God.

This was the purpose for which our Savior assumed our nature, this was why Christ the Lord accepted the sufferings that brought us salvation, was sent to his death and was committed to the tomb. He broke the grip of the age-old tyranny and promised incorruptibility to those who were prisoners of corruption. For when he rebuilt that temple which had been destroyed and raised it up again, 
he thereby gave trustworthy and firm promises to those who had died and were awaiting his resurrection.

Jesus tells us: “Just as my human nature, which I took from you, has won its resurrection in virtue of the Godhead that dwelt in it and with which it was united, just as this nature has shed decay and suffering and passed over to incorruptibility and immortality; so, in the same way, you too will be set free from the grievous slavery of death; 
you too will cast aside your corruptible nature and your sufferings and you will be clothed with impassability.”

To this end he imparted the gift of baptism to all mankind through his apostles. Go, he said, make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Baptism is a kind of symbol and type of the Lord’s death, which is why Paul says: If we have shared with God’s Son in a death like his, 
we shall certainly share in his resurrection.
