Prayers to St. Frances Xavier Cabrini

Patron of Immigrants

Almighty and eternal Father,

Giver of all Gifts,

show us Thy mercy,

and grant, we beseech Thee,

through the merits of Thy faithful servant,

Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini,

that all who invoke her intercession

may obtain what they desire according to the good pleasure of Thy Holy Will.

beloved spouse of the Sacred Heart of Jesus,

intercede for us that the favor we now ask may be granted.

WIS 6:1-11

Hear, O kings, and understand;

learn, you magistrates of the earth’s expanse!

Hearken, you who are in power over the multitude

and lord it over throngs of peoples!

Because authority was given you by the Lord

and sovereignty by the Most High,

who shall probe your works and scrutinize your counsels.

Because, though you were ministers of his kingdom, you judged not rightly,

and did not keep the law,

nor walk according to the will of God,

Terribly and swiftly shall he come against you,

because judgment is stern for the exalted–

For the lowly may be pardoned out of mercy

As Jesus continued his journey to Jerusalem,

he traveled through Samaria and Galilee.

As he was entering a village, ten lepers met him.

They stood at a distance from him and raised their voice, saying,

“Jesus, Master! Have pity on us!”

And when he saw them, he said,

“Go show yourselves to the priests.”

As they were going they were cleansed.

And one of them, realizing he had been healed,

returned, glorifying God in a loud voice;

and he fell at the feet of Jesus and thanked him.

He was a Samaritan.

Jesus said in reply,

“Ten were cleansed, were they not?

Where are the other nine?

Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to God?”

Then he said to him,

“Stand up and go;

your faith has saved you.”

St. Frances Xavier Cabrini (1850-1917)

Frances Xavier Cabrini was the first United States citizen to be canonized; she became a U.S. citizen in 1909. 

Her deep trust in the loving care of her God gave her the strength to be a valiant woman doing the work of Christ.

Refused admission to the religious order which had educated her to be a teacher, she began charitable work at the House of Providence Orphanage in Cadogno, Italy. 

In September 1877 she made her vows there and took the religious habit.

When the bishop closed the orphanage in 1880, 

he named Frances prioress of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart. 
Seven young women from the orphanage joined her.

Since her early childhood in Italy, 

Frances had wanted to be a missionary in China but, at the urging of Pope Leo XIII, Frances went west instead of east. 

She traveled with six sisters to New York City to work with the thousands of Italian immigrants living there.

She found disappointment and difficulties with every step. When she arrived in New York City, the house intended to be her first orphanage in the United States was not available. The archbishop advised her to return to Italy. But Frances, truly a valiant woman, departed from the archbishop’s residence all the more determined to establish that orphanage. And she did.

In 35 years Frances Xavier Cabrini founded 67 institutions dedicated to caring for the poor, the abandoned, the uneducated and the sick. Seeing great need among Italian immigrants who were losing their faith, 

she organized schools and adult education classes.

As a child, she was always frightened of water, unable to overcome her fear of drowning. Yet, despite this fear, she traveled across the Atlantic Ocean more than 30 times. She died of malaria in her own Columbus Hospital in Chicago.

First Reading

Daniel 5:1-2,5-9,13-17,25-6:1

King Belshazzar gave a great banquet for his noblemen; a thousand of them attended, and he drank wine in company with this thousand. As he sipped his wine, Belshazzar gave orders for the gold and silver vessels to be brought which his father Nebuchadnezzar had looted from the sanctuary in Jerusalem, so that the king, his noblemen, 

his wives and his singing women could drink out of them.

Suddenly the fingers of a human hand appeared, and began to write on the plaster of the palace wall, directly behind the lamp-stand; and the king could see the hand as it wrote. The king turned pale with alarm: his thigh-joints went slack and his knees began to knock. He shouted for his enchanters, Chaldaeans and wizards. And the king said to the Babylonian sages, ‘Anyone who can read this writing and tell me what it means shall be dressed in purple, and have a chain of gold put round his neck, and be third in rank in the kingdom.’ The king’s sages all crowded forward, but they could neither read the writing nor explain to the king what it meant. Greatly alarmed, 

King Belshazzar turned even paler, and his noblemen were equally disturbed.

Daniel was brought into the king’s presence; the king said to Daniel, ‘Are you the Daniel who was one of the Judaean exiles brought by my father the king from Judah? I am told that the spirit of God Most Holy lives in you, and that you are known for your perception, intelligence and marvelous wisdom. The sages and enchanters have already been brought to me to read this writing and tell me what it means, but they have been unable to reveal its meaning. As I am told that you are able to give interpretations and to unravel difficult problems, if you can read the writing and tell me what it means, you shall be dressed in purple, and have a chain of gold put round your neck, 

and be third in rank in the kingdom.’

Then Daniel spoke up in the presence of the king. ‘Keep your gifts for yourself,’ he said ‘and give your rewards to others. I will read the writing to the king without them, and tell him what it means. The writing reads: Mene, Mene, Tekel and Parsin. The meaning of the words is this: Mene: God has measured your sovereignty and put an end to it; Tekel: you have been weighed in the balance and found wanting; Parsin: 

your kingdom has been divided and given to the Medes and the Persians.’

At Belshazzar’s order Daniel was dressed in purple, 

a chain of gold was put round his neck and he was proclaimed third in rank in the kingdom.

That same night, the Chaldaean king Belshazzar was murdered, and Darius the Mede received the kingdom, 

at the age of sixty-two.

Second Reading

A sermon of the second century

Let hope give us endurance

And so, my brethren, let us do the will of the Father who has called us to life. Let us try harder for virtue and abandon bad habits which pave the way for crimes to follow. For if we try hard to do good, peace will always be with us. 
That is why men can never be at peace while they are dragged along by human fears and put present pleasure above the promise of the future. 

They are ignorant of how much torment worldly indulgence brings and how much delight is promised in the future.

If they alone behaved like that, it might be tolerable; but they go one step further and imbue the souls of the innocent with their perverse teachings – 

not realizing that this will condemn them twice, once for themselves and once for their hearers.

Therefore let us serve God with a pure heart, and we shall be justified. On the other hand, if we do not serve him, disbelieving in his promises, we shall be miserable. For in the words of the prophecy: Unhappy those who are undecided, those who hesitate in their hearts and say “We have heard these things before, in our fathers’ time, but now we look for them day after day and see nothing.” Fools, compare yourselves to a plant: a vine, for instance. First its leaves fall, then comes the shoot, then a small unripe grape, and at last a mature and ripe fruit. 

In the same way my people has endured turmoil and suffering, and later will receive good from it.

So let us not be in two minds, my brethren, but let us endure in hope so that we receive our due reward. God is faithful and he has promised to give everyone the due reward of his actions. So if we have acted righteously in God’s eyes we shall enter into his kingdom and receive what he has promised, that no eye has seen and no ear has heard, 

things beyond the mind of man.

Let us expect the kingdom of God hourly in love and righteousness, seeing that we do not know the day of his coming. Let us do penance. At present we are full of malice and madness, so now let us revive, let us come back to life, to good life. Let us wipe off the slime of our old sins and by doing heartfelt penance let us recover our health. Let us not be sycophantic. Let us seek men’s favor solely by our righteousness, both in the Church and outside it, 

so that the holy Name is not blasphemed because of us.
